CBC fires contractor, highlights problems with tendering process

Last year’s grass-cutting failure has led to the sacking of Central Bedfordshire Council's contractor.

This isn’t just about having tidy grass areas. It is a matter of highway safety. Lack of visibility at road junctions has led to many complaints from motorists.

Cllr Brian Spurr, the CBC executive member responsible for the contract, said "If the contractor had performed in the way he said he could then we would not have had that much of a problem.” Exactly! We now have all the expense of re-tendering and re-evaluating a new contract. Let’s hope that this time CBC assesses the capability of any new contractor to perform the task properly, rather than just taking the lowest bidder.
